information on Albunol and surrounds

Casa Pequeña, Albuñol,
Granada, Southern Spain

Albuñol is set between the Phoenician settlements of Adra and Alumeñécar. Neolithic burial remains have been found just outside the town, in the "Cave of Bats" but it was the Moors who brought the town to prominence and it was the castle at La Rábita that defended it. Nowadays it is a bustling, rural town of some 5000 inhabitants and all the shops and services you would need. This is a largely agrarian area, with the greenhouses and fields supplying the supermarkets of Europe and sheep and goats grazing the hills. The most common crops are tomatoes, courgettes, cucumbers, beans and on the hills are almonds and of course, vines. There is a market underneath the town hall where the local produce is sold, also chorizo, jamon and a good fish stall. Fresh food is in abundance and only a few minutes walk away from the cottage and the cooker! If you prefer not to cook, there are numerous bars serving tapas and some that serve a full meal. There are also restaurants and bars  at La Rábita only 5 minutes drive away.

Eating Out
Albuñol has many Tapas Bars that are open all day for coffee, drinks or snacks. In the evening complimentary tapas are served with a glass of beer, taken at the bar or orders are taken for larger portions.  Bar Lupion and Bar Ferdinand serve full meals throughout the day and evening, as do Casa Sergio and Rincón de Guillermo  in La Rábita. There are others on the sea front who only open in high season.
Worth a mention outside the town, are Venta del Tarugo, a bar with a restaurante for Sunday lunch on the Albondon/Cadiar road and two "rural hotels" Alqueria Morayma
www.alqueriamorayma.com/ingles and Cortijo Garin www.cortijogarin.com/english both with  food typical of the region,  organic vegetable gardens and their own grounds.

There are many and varied waymarked walks around Albuñol; the view from the lounge of the cottage is the Ruta del Gato which starts just past Bar Serafin.  There are fantastic views from the top of this, the Mediterranean to the South, Mulhacén to the North and a panorama of Albuñol. You may see raptors and other birds, swallowtails and other exotic insects. There are walks up the rambla (dry river bed) leading to a steep narrow gorge (Angosturras) or for the more adventurous there are longer hikes across the hills to the sea or further into the mountain villages. Everywhere in the spring and autumn there is a plethora of  wild flowers, from the everlasting pea to wild thymes, lavenders  and oleander.
